Who we are

Homemade Pet Store started in 2019 as a side project — one family volunteering weekends at the local shelter in Cathedral City, realising every animal placed opened a kennel for the next. What began as transport runs grew into a storefront on Highway 111 that now partners with more than 40 shelters across Southern California.

What "rescue-first" actually means

We don’t breed, import, or buy animals for resale. Every pet in our store came from a shelter within the region. We work with the fullest shelters each week so adoptions move the animals that most need moving. If you want a specific breed or age, we’ll tell you honestly whether we can match it or point you to a rescue who can.

Health-screened before they leave

Every animal is examined by our vet partner on intake, vaccinated to age, treated for parasites, microchipped, and (if old enough) spayed or neutered. No fine print. If something turns up in the first 30 days that we should have caught, we cover the vet bills.

Lifetime support

Adoption isn’t a transaction — it’s the start of a twelve-to-twenty-year project. Every adoption comes with:

— Access to our training video library

— A standing invitation to come back for advice, food top-ups, or a second opinion, for as long as your pet is with you.

Many adopters become volunteers themselves.

The team

Five people — two on-site vet techs, two adoption counsellors, and a small-business husband-and-wife who keep the lights on. We’re open seven days, parking is in the back, and yes, you can absolutely just come by to say hi to the animals.
